Metallica (Kirk Hammet) guitar lesson, Fade to Black (part 1)

-> go to part 1

The following faster passage is actually two arpeggios, B minor triad arpeggio and D major triad arpeggio (relative major key), followed by scalar tones played legato.

e|-----14-19p14-------15p14-----------------------|
b|--15----------15----------15----17p15p14--------|
g|-----------------16----------14----------16-14br|
d|------------------------------------------------|
a|------------------------------------------------|
e|------------------------------------------------|

If you are having problems with this part, you should break it up into the following segments, and practice them separately:

B minor triad arpeggio D major triad arpeggio (the first note is "passing" and does not belong to the arpeggio) . B minor scale
e|-----14-19p14-------|
b|--15----------15----|
g|-----------------16-|
d|--------------------|
a|--------------------|
e|--------------------|
e|-15p14------|
b|-------15---|
g|----------14|
d|------------|
a|------------|
e|------------|
e|-----------------|
b|-17p15p14--------|
g|----------16-14br|
d|-----------------|
a|-----------------|
e|-----------------|

The following is just an ascending B minor scale with a short rhythmic speed burst. Listen carefully to get the phrasing right:

e|-------------------------------------------------19-17-15-|
b|----------------------14-15-14h15p14----14-15-14----------|
g|-14h16----------14-16----------------16-------------------|
d|-------14-14h16-------------------------------------------|
a|----------------------------------------------------------|
e|----------------------------------------------------------|

Yet some arpeggios (same as above but with slightly different passing scalar tones), which result in a strong melodic sound:

e|--15-17-14--------14-15-14-------|
b|-----------15--------------15----|
g|--------------16--------------14-|
d|---------------------------------|
a|---------------------------------|
e|---------------------------------|

e|-14-15-14----17--15-14~-|
b|----------15------------|
g|------------------------|
d|------------------------|
a|------------------------|
e|------------------------|

This ending "buil-up" is, for most part, played three notes per string (A minor scale). If this is new to you, take the time and get the right fingering down (see video).

e|---------------------------------|
b|------------------------12-13-15-|
g|------------------12-14----------|
d|---------12-14-15----------------|
a|12-14-15-------------------------|
e|---------------------------------|

e|-12-13-15-13h15p13----------|
b|-------------------15-15/17~|
g|----------------------------|
d|----------------------------|
a|----------------------------|
e|----------------------------|

Good luck!!

/Kristofer
