Slash "Give in to me" guitar lesson

Time to look at wonderful Slash solo that can be found on Michael Jackson's album "Dangerous". When Slash entered the scene with Guns 'n Roses in the late 80's he completely crushed the "shred" - guitar scene with his melodic, bluesy yet agressive style. This solo sure is packed with feel and tone.
The solo is not very technical (= fast), but getting the bends to the right pitch can be tricky. From an instructional point of view, mastering this solo will help you develop tone and phrasing. Give it your best shot!!

| Scale and chord theory |
| The backing guitar plays this sequence: |
 |
The key is E minor, and Slash sticks to it by playing E minor pentatonic. However, at the very beginning of the solo, he hits an F# (11th fret, G string) which is a major second. By doing so he alters the pentatonic scale, technically making it an E hexatonic scale ( E,F#,G, A,B,D). Bending from the major second to the minor third, as Slash does here, is a common trick. Going from an "outside" note to a chord note usually sounds right. |

Listen and watch carefully to get the bends right:

e|---------------------------|
b|---------------------------|
g|-/9---9-11-11br-p9-11b-11--|
d|----9----------------------|
a|---------------------------|
e|---------------------------| |
Then practice the slide followed by two pull-offs:
| |
e|--------------|
b|--------------|
g|-/16p14p12----|
d|-----------14-|
a|--------------|
e|--------------| |
Now put the two parts together:

g|-/9---9-11-11br-p9-11b-11--/16p14p12----|
d|----9--------------------------------14-|
