The only things you need to know to play Nirvana

Nirvana songs are easy - they where a perfect introduction to rhtyhm guitar for me, when I was a beginner. Here is what you need to know...

1. Strumming is Alpha & Omega (= very important), if you don't strum the chords correctly no one will recognise the song you try to play. To get the right combination of up- and down-strokes you need to watch my right hand very closely in the videos, over and over until you get it.

2. Kurt Cobain makes use of the tiny time-gap which occurs in between the chord changes, and hits the open strings to produce a cool effect. If you don't get the riffs to sound right, this might be what you are missing, solution: watch out for the open strings in the tab and in the videos.

3. Nirvana solos are even easier. I usually let my beginner guitar students have a go at the Smells Like Teen Spirit - solo. For ~ 50 % of them it's a gateway to try more advanced solos. If soloing still isn't working for you, don't despair, it's probably because you have got some of the basics wrong. To solve this you should attend a live guitar lesson, or have a look at my four step method for beginners.

Good luck - and remember you can be a great guitarist too!!
