Steve Morse "Vavoom" (Deep Purple) guitar lesson (part2)
-> Go to part 1 3
The following lick is a prefect one for you to practice and incorporate into your playing. This because the chromatic tonality makes it suitable for most keys, you only need to make sure the "landing notes" are in the right key.

This next segment is harmonically interesting, previously in this solo most chromatics have been used as "passing tones" in speed licks. However, Steve Morse uses the chromatice scale (= all/any notes) for phrasing here. Listen how nicely it leads the melody, without sounding atonal or "jazzy" at all... Time for rock guitarists to start experimenting away from their pentatonics?

Here is the trickyest part of the solo. Steve uses all things which you normally don't want to have in a speed run, still he gets up to tempo. Some of them are: 5-notes per string fingerings, string skips, one-note per string (!) etc. For this lick to sound even, inspite of it's diffulty, it is crucial that you alternate pick everything. Good luck!
