Steve Morse "Vavoom" (Deep Purple) guitar lesson (part3)
-> Go to part 1 2

This next lick is an example on how to make a standard descending blues run more interesting:

e|-17br-15br--12-----12--12-----------------------|
b|---------------15b--------15-14-12--------------|
g|-----------------------------------15-14-12h13--|
d|------------------------------------------------|
a|------------------------------------------------|
e|------------------------------------------------|

e|----------------------------------------|
b|----------------------------------------|
g|----------------------------------------|
d|-14----12-11----------------------------|
a|----14-------14-12----------------------|
e|-------------------15-14-15---12-10-12--|

Listen to how Steve hangs on the notes to create nice and unpredictable phrasing. The speed bursts in this one are there to create contrast to the sustained notes.

e|----------------------------------------------------|
b|----------------------------------------------------|
g|----------11b--11br----------12br-----------12------|
d|-11-12-14-----------14-11----------12-13-14----14\--|
a|--------------------------14------------------------|
e|----------------------------------------------------|

This next lick is really not rock, except for the distorted sound. Instead, it is a wonderfuly incorporated country lick, with all the theoretical tricks of the trade mentioned earlier (alternation between the b3 and 3, major sixth, chromatics etc).

e|-5b-0-----4-5---3-4----------------------------|
b|------pb3-----5-----5-----5-4h5p0--------------|
g|----------------------6-4---------4-3-2-1h2----|
d|--------------------------------------------2--|
a|-----------------------------------------------|
e|-----------------------------------------------|

pb - pre bend

Yet another "Morsy" , rhythmic, speedpicking example. To create a strong staccato effect you should palm mute the speedpicked notes.

e|---------------------------------|
b|---------------------------------|
g|---------------------------------|
d|-------------5-------------------|
a|-------5-6-7----7-6-5-------7-7--|
e|-5-6-7----------------7-6-5------|

To finish the solo Steve chooses to end in the same octave as the rhythm guitar.

e|-----------------|
b|-----------------|
g|-----------------|
d|-----------------|
a|-5---7-5---------|
e|---7-----5-6-7-3-|

Good luck!

/Kristofer
