Stevie Ray Vaughan "Voodoo chile" guitar lesson (part1)
-> Go to part 2

Bluesmaster Stevie Ray Vaughan played like a possed man, his improvised repertoire of blues licks seemed endless. In this lesson you will hopefully get a feel for his innovative approach to blues soloing.

The "Voodoo chile (slight return)" solo contains sweeps/rakes, double stops, bends, chromatic legato slurs, "outside tones", unorthodox phrasing etc. The theory behind the solo is quite simple: it's all played in the first pentatonic "box" in Eb minor (also known as the blues box). Important note: Stevie plays the solo in E, but tunes down a half step. However, the solo in this lesson is trascribed to Eb so that you don't have to change your guitar's tuning.

Note how the following segment is ended with an unpredictable octave jump. Try ending your own improvisations the same way.

Even though you should strive for a consistent alternate picking (down up down up etc.), it is sometimes more effective to pick hard with consecutive downstrokes. Occasionally playing with more attack is a nice way of creating variation in dynamics (especially if your amplifier is sensitive to dynamics).

Next comes some truly original pentatonic licks! The following rhythm is achieved through string skipping, also notice the five-string rake/sweep. These two mentioned techniques are also frequently used in "shred" - guitar style.

At this point in the solo Stevie virtually goes crazy with rakes and string skipping. Make sure you practice this in sections, as these kind of licks usually do not come easy, if you are not use to them.
