Look at the first bar. It is the second and third beats that create the syncopated rhythm. All the rest of the beats are exactly the same. The syncopation comes from your ear attuning to the high notes, which it expects to be on the beats. Now what I want to do is to add one extra tone at a certain stage. Each time we decend from 12-9-5, I want you to put in an extra two notes, in this case 0-5. Do this by pulling off and hammering back on with the first finger. We now get: Pattern 1. The trick to putting the piece together is to try and get the notes to sound regular, so that they seem to be the same speed. If you aim to tap out the
